The Importance of Social Networks to Marketers

Published on 15 December 2008 by Sam Gadsby in Industry News, Social Network Marketing

It may not be breaking news that social networking websites have boomed over the last 3 years. In fact, social networking sites have been a hot topic in the media for a while now.

Although marketers have been aware of social media, with many even trialling social media marketing, tentative steps have always been taken into a largely unknown advertising platform. We have all read about the booming business, but how much is broadly known as to the scale of which social networking has grown?

Facebook, the most used social network site in the UK now has over 14 million active users, and is probably the perfect example. Since 2006 Facebook has seen an increase of users by 500 percent. In the same timeframe social networking as a whole has grown by a massive 93 percent.

So what does this offer marketers?

As well as a huge new market, targeting on social network sites can be enormously effective. Age, gender, location and personal interests, to name but a few, can all refine targeting. This allows marketers to pinpoint their precise audience demographic.

It’s not just teens…

Social Networks are now used by 78% of UK adults aged 15 and over. Although it is still widely believed that social network users are purely teens and early twenty somethings, this is certainly not the case. This is shown in the fact that Facebook’s current fastest growing demographic is people aged 25 and over. In the UK alone Facebook has over 7 million users aged 25 years and above.

Benefits to marketers…

A recent piece of research further outlined the importance of social network users to the marketing community, as it was discovered that the average user spends £67 ($101) online each month.

With the market still in its early stages and advertising platforms ever developing, costs are still relatively low, especially as many social networks now allow for CPC based campaigns – making the campaigns even more measurable with even less risk.

Pretty sure that brands that are now taking part in social media are going to come out of the recession in a stronger position than their competitors who are not taking part in social media. Social media campaigns take time and effort but are worth it in the long-run.
