Is email old news? Well a Neilson survey of users’ online habits has found that email is the latest technology to fall behind in the online race as Social Networks continue to further dominate time spent online. Furthermore, this gap is continually growing and doesn’t look set to stop.
The most recent findings show that one in every six minutes of the average web user’s time is spent on Social sites, particularly on the big players Facebook, MySpace, Bebo and the ever growing Twitter.
This is also displayed in the overall usage, with 65.1% of the population emailing whilst 66.8% of people are now logging into Social Networking Sites.
Is the race now over for email? Or just that age old tale of the Hare and the tortoise? It is difficult to say, there is no doubt that email will continue to be part of the race, slowly dawdling along as ever.
For the immediate future though the Hare shows no sign of slowing down or taking a break with Social Networks take up rate four times stronger than in any other sector. With advantages over email such as being much more flexible and interactive and not to mention that is much more immediate it could be an age before email can even see social networking in the distance.
