With Facebook’s recent announcement that the Social Network has reached the 300 million worldwide user milestone it is obvious that Facebook need a mass of space to support it’s operations.

So how many servers does Facebook actually have? Well, Jeff Rothschild, the vice president of technology at Facebook, recently announced in a presentation that Facebook have “somewhere in the neighborhood of 30,000 servers,”.

Rothschild also suggested that Facebook manages more than 25 terabytes of data per day in logging data, which is apparently the equivalent of about 1,000 times the volume of mail delivered daily by the U.S. Postal Service! To service the servers Facebook have 230 engineers which is a ratio of over 1m users per engineer.

Here are some other interesting facts about the amount of data Facebook have to deal with:

  • Facebook’s photo storage operation now stores a massive 80 billion images
  • The real challenge for Facebook lies in delivery rather than storage, having to serve up 600,000 photos per second!
