Category: Web Published on: 27th June 2013

Using the simple instructions below, you can see how easy it is to upgrade your website to the latest version of WordPress.

How do you know when your WordPress website needs updating? Simple, WordPress notifies you when a new version is available and will appear at the top of the admin area, as seen below.

Please see below the steps required to update to the latest version of WordPress:

Step 1:

Check that the server the website is hosted on supports the latest version of WordPress. The current requirements for WordPress 3.5.2 are:

  • PHP 5.2.4 or greater
  • MySQL 5.0 or greater
  • The mod_rewrite Apache module

Step 2:

The next step is the most important step of all, make sure you take a full backup of both the website template files along with the database.

Step 3:

Next, if you log in to the WordPress admin area, you should then see the Update status bar at the top. Simply click the “Please update now” link to begin the update.

Step 4:

WordPress should now have updated all of the core template files. All that is required now is to update the MySQL database, which again is done automatically by WordPress. Simply log back in to the admin area again and it will prompt you to upgrade the database.

Step 5:

Completed! The website should now be running the latest version of WordPress.

Some hosting companies don’t allow the correct privileges for the automatic WordPress update, so a manual update would be required. If you don’t have the correct privileges and would like an expert at Clicky Media to help out, then please contact craig@clickymedia.co.uk.
