Top 5 e-commerce tips

Published on 17 August 2011 by Vicky Walsh in E-commerce, Web Design, Web Design Tips

Last year alone, 42.6% of UK consumers bought something online at least once a week. This defines how increasingly important it is to have an e-commerce website which is both relevant and easy to use. So here are my top 5 tips for a successful e-commerce store:

Stay relevant and up to date
Make sure your homepage content is updated on a regular basis and shows off the best areas of your website. A stale homepage can have a negative impact on time spent on site by the user and poor navigability can cause increased visitor bounce rates. Furthermore, visitor loyalty can decreased hugely if your home page hasn’t been developed with usability in mind. Keep things fresh by updating content, imagery and links regularly –  theming your website in accordance to different seasons or festive periods such as Christmas can be a great way to do this.

Offer multiple payment options
With payment processing, there is two methods of paying for something online. One is using an integrated solution from your bank to accept credit cards (such as Sagepay) and the other is 3rd party applications such as PayPal and Google Checkout. By offering a payment type choices, users are much more likely to have the option of selecting the one that is most convenient for them. If a user doesn’t have this option they may choose to shop elsewhere where that particular payment method is available.

The 3 click process
Being able to buy a product within 3 clicks is very important for conversions. If a user has to click more than this to be able to find the product, then it’s likely they will get distracted, or simply give up. If you have a large online store with many products and cannot narrow it down, then consider a breadcrumb trail or filters as a great way of showing the search process.

Make sure delivery costs are clear
One of the biggest reasons for a high bounce rate during the shopping cart process is because people are trying to find out how much the delivery charges are! If you stay transparent and clearly display any shipping costs then people are more likely to trust your store and complete the process.

Cross-sell & up-sell where possible
With shopping online, 80% of people already know what they are looking for, and rarely look around the rest of the store.  Showing related or matching items at the bottom of each product page is a great way of up-selling or including deals such as ‘spend £x.xx and receive free delivery’ is always a surefire way of getting larger orders.
