SEO Buyers Guide

SEO in the UK is big business.  Almost every business in the UK is interested in getting better search engine listings and there are literally hundreds of agencies looking to help you achieve your goal.

You may have taken a call recently (or an email) telling you that your website is not found for any keywords and that they can “get you top of Google”. Unfortunately these claims are often completely false and based on virtually no statistical data at all.  Often your number has just been found via a business directory (double glazing style!)

SEO Mis-selling

SEO is massively mis-sold and often companies find themselves in contracts with agencies who are doing very little for their money and more often than not, failing to reach your goals.

We inherit clients every week who have been mis-sold an SEO package and have been flighting to get out of a very binding contract.

Ignore cold-callers!

The thing to remember is that the good SEO agencies do not need to do cold calls!  They usually get work based on the results they have achieved.

Beware of the long contract!

A good SEO agency will also not be hassling you to commit to a 2 or 3 year contract, typically 6 months is a good starting point, within which they should be able to prove their ability.

Make sure they ask the right questions!

Normally a good SEO agency will ask to have access to your website via FTP or at least be in contact with your web design company to make some on-site changes.  We are amazed how many companies tell us their last SEO company didn’t ask for this!

Make sure they discuss your goals and your competitors, they need to know these to do their job properly.

SEO is not cheap

SEO is all about time.  To optimise your website an SEO company needs a number of hours to spend on your website, optimising via “on-page” methods and “off-page” methods such as link building.  Typically a good SEO agency will charge anything from £50-£100 per hour for the work they do (We charge £60+VAT), if you are paying less than £100 per month then you can imagine how long they are spending on your website. Any less than £100 then they are more than likely using an automated system which will be doing virtually nothing.

We are not alone, there are a bunch of great SEO companies in the UK but make sure you choose a good one.  Our industry is still relatively new and companies are taking advantage of the lack of understanding.  Ask for examples, ignore cold callers and don’t sign your life away!
