It was recently reported that Facebook was launching a new simplified version of the Social Networking platform named Facebook Lite. Following this news, Facebook users reported being invited to trial the beta version of Facebook Lite. Beta testing began following Facebook releasing its new Realtime search and just a day after Facebook acquired FriendFeed.
It seems as though Facebook is extremely keen to keep up with other Social Networking sites in the race for real time. The new Facebook lite platform is very much like a combination of Twitter and FriendFeed in its functionality allowing users to see most recent status updates and a left-hand navigation bar with the four main categories – Friends, Wall, Info, Photo’s and Videos. Essentially it is just a very basic version of Facebook.

It is said that Facebook Lite has been launched to directly compete with Twitter. It is the latest update in the saga of facebook launching features to give them the edge over Twitter, such as the launch of public profiles, profile fans, public status updates and realtime search. However, others speculate that it could simply be a stripped back version for users who have a slow internet connection.
