<p>This is a great development for two reasons.</p>
<p>Firstly brands that started before 1800 can now more accurately tell their customers how and when they were founded.</p>
<p>The second is how this change came about. Mashable posted a piece last week commenting on the issues some brands would have with the Timelines only being able to go back as far as 1800. Since then Facebook has extended the time frame to the year 1000!</p>
<p>The year 1800 date wasn&#8217;t an issue when the Timelines where only used for personal profiles, however there are companies and organisations that were founded far earlier than 2 centuries ago who required the timeline to be extended.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s amazing how much power one internet post can have!</p>

<p>Facebook are launching Timeline for Brands today! Whilst this will start with just a few beta pages the Timelines will eventually roll out across all brands.</p>
<p>The change to timelines will impact the brands and their pages in several ways. Primarily this will effect the way we see brand pages, imagery is a huge part of most major brands with their iconic trademarks and engaging imagery drawing customers to buy their products.</p>
<p>Rather than a large brand&#8217;s Facebook page being more of a corporate advertisement, the new timelines will encourage them to be far more community and conversational driven with a much larger scope to reach people through the web and mobile devices.</p>
<p>So here&#8217;s the sum up of the 3 main features for the timeline pages:</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Express</span></strong></p>
<p>You can utilize the cover photo to really express your identity. Brands have already started to make good use of this new visual space.</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Reach</span></strong></p>
<p>There will be much more opportunity for reaching the target audience, whether they are on the web or a mobile device.</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Respond</span></strong></p>
<p>It will be much easier to respond to people quickly and personally, enabling the larger brands to respond to particular requests and conversations.<strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><br />

<p>So on March 30th you can look forward to the new Timeline Pages being visible to the public worldwide.</p>

Like sponsored stories, the ads will show to a user&#8217;s friends when they interact with a brand on Facebook via the brand&#8217;s Facebook Page. However, these ads also allow for an advertiser message to appear alongside the interaction (effectively combining the functionality of social ads and sponsored stories).</p>
<p>The ads are then taken a step further, adding the expandable element. These ads will also expand to allow you to comment on the interaction and the ad message, as well as see other comments that have been made on it, in a similar way that Facebook users can now comment &amp; &#8220;like&#8221; each others&#8217; wall posts and statuses.</p>
<p>Sponsored Stories and Social Ads are becoming increasingly popular due to their appearance as more of a recommendation from a friend as opposed to a straight ad message, with the widely held belief that these are far more effective, generating more interest and clicks. By increasing the capacity for social interaction, these new ads look like they&#8217;re going to be even more powerful&#8230; watch this space!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Following the interesting recent research conducted by Nielsen, we thought our readers would like an update on UK Facebook stats for June 2011 and the UK Social Media Scene in general.</p>
<p>As we have been working in Social Media for over three years now we can reflect on the growth of social networks and look back in amazement at the figures. The graphs don&#8217;t fail to impress and as ever we have some interesting facts for you&#8230;</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Overall Worldwide Users</strong></span></p>
<p>As it is well reported, Facebook is still by far the most popular and well used Social Network both here in the UK and worldwide. Its two closest competitors are still not to be ignored however, Linkedin has now accumulated over 100 millions users and earlier in the year Twitter announced that they had over 175 million global users.</p>

<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Worldwide Facebook Users</strong></span></p>
<p>Despite the fact that we are seeing figures begin to plateau in some large countries which were early adopters of the social network, the overall worldwide user numbers continue to rocket at an impressive rate. Although not officially announced by Facebook it now seems as though the site has surpassed 700 millions worldwide users, almost exactly a year after announcing that they had achieved the 500 million user milestone. Although in terms of percentage growth it has nothing on the previous year on year stats, it is still a huge achievement. What Facebook will be most pleased about however is the fact that a year on and with an even larger audience they are still citing the 50% active rate of a year ago, meaning that on average over 350m users are logging into Facebook every day!</p>

<p>Back by popular demand, please see below a round up of Facebook Statistic for June 2011. This time we look back over the last four years to see the growth of Facebook in the UK. Although the growth doesn&#8217;t quite match the worldwide figures over the past 12 months the social network is still slowly increasing in users. Facebook has also reached another domination landmark by becoming the second most popular website in the UK behind Google. This month it surpassed Microsoft portals (including combined MSN/Live/Bing) to reach the latest ranking.<span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong> </strong></span></p>

<p>As the <a title="BBC" href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-13925893">BBC reported</a> yesterday, the greatest growth area in UK users is that of silver surfers aged 50+ and as you can see from the comparison graph below this is the case across all age groups 30+. The thirty-plus demographic now represents around 48% of all UK Facebook users.</p>
