Facebook is expected to announce this week the launch of new expandable Facebook ads. Like sponsored stories, the ads will show to a user’s friends when they interact with a brand on Facebook via the brand’s Facebook Page. However, these ads also allow for an advertiser message to appear alongside the interaction (effectively combining the functionality of social ads and sponsored stories).

The ads are then taken a step further, adding the expandable element. These ads will also expand to allow you to comment on the interaction and the ad message, as well as see other comments that have been made on it, in a similar way that Facebook users can now comment & “like” each others’ wall posts and statuses.

Sponsored Stories and Social Ads are becoming increasingly popular due to their appearance as more of a recommendation from a friend as opposed to a straight ad message, with the widely held belief that these are far more effective, generating more interest and clicks. By increasing the capacity for social interaction, these new ads look like they’re going to be even more powerful… watch this space!

Following the interesting recent research conducted by Nielsen, we thought our readers would like an update on UK Facebook stats for June 2011 and the UK Social Media Scene in general.

As we have been working in Social Media for over three years now we can reflect on the growth of social networks and look back in amazement at the figures. The graphs don’t fail to impress and as ever we have some interesting facts for you…

Overall Worldwide Users

As it is well reported, Facebook is still by far the most popular and well used Social Network both here in the UK and worldwide. Its two closest competitors are still not to be ignored however, Linkedin has now accumulated over 100 millions users and earlier in the year Twitter announced that they had over 175 million global users.

Worldwide Facebook Users

Despite the fact that we are seeing figures begin to plateau in some large countries which were early adopters of the social network, the overall worldwide user numbers continue to rocket at an impressive rate. Although not officially announced by Facebook it now seems as though the site has surpassed 700 millions worldwide users, almost exactly a year after announcing that they had achieved the 500 million user milestone. Although in terms of percentage growth it has nothing on the previous year on year stats, it is still a huge achievement. What Facebook will be most pleased about however is the fact that a year on and with an even larger audience they are still citing the 50% active rate of a year ago, meaning that on average over 350m users are logging into Facebook every day!

UK Facebook Stats

Back by popular demand, please see below a round up of Facebook Statistic for June 2011. This time we look back over the last four years to see the growth of Facebook in the UK. Although the growth doesn’t quite match the worldwide figures over the past 12 months the social network is still slowly increasing in users. Facebook has also reached another domination landmark by becoming the second most popular website in the UK behind Google. This month it surpassed Microsoft portals (including combined MSN/Live/Bing) to reach the latest ranking.

As the BBC reported yesterday, the greatest growth area in UK users is that of silver surfers aged 50+ and as you can see from the comparison graph below this is the case across all age groups 30+. The thirty-plus demographic now represents around 48% of all UK Facebook users.

Sources:

Here’s your latest round up of Social Media stats for February 2010!

Social Networking websites continue to grow on a huge scale with Facebook recently announcing that they have now reached over 400 million worldwide users and Twitter soon to be reaching the benchmark of 50 million tweets per day. Facebook and Twitter also both boasted a triple-digit growth in 2009 with social networking now accounting for 11% of all time spent online.

Not only have user figures grown across social media websites but so has usage and time spent on social networking sites. A report from The Nielsen Company showed that there has been a huge increase of 82% in time spent on social networking sites. Across the globe over the past year average time spent on social networking sites grew from 3 hours per month to 5.5 hours. In addition Nielsen concluded that overall social media sites such as Facebook are now the most common homepages for users and that people now spend the majority of theit internet time using social networks or blogs.

Forrester also recently produced some interesting stats about adults using social media. Some of the findings included:

A third of adults post at least once a week to social sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

A quarter of adults publish a blog and upload video/audio they created.

Nearly 60% maintain a profile on a social networking site.

70% Read blogs, tweets and watch UGC video.

UK Social Media Stats

The popularity of Social Media continues to rise rapidly in the UK, now accounting for almost 11% of the share of UK Internet visits – continually closing the gap on search and entertainment websites.

Facebook’s growth in the UK continues with a reported 24 million active users. It now accounts for over half of all visits to social networking sites in the UK with YouTube sitting in second with over 17% of visits. Despite the media coverage and growth of Twitter over the past year the micro-blogging site makes up only around 2% of visits to social media sites in the UK, only just surpassing Bebo.

Facebook, the social networking giants have seen a massive growth over the past couple of years in terms of users, visitor figures and average time spent on the site but they have now also managed to increase video streaming dramatically.

Last month Facebook jumped up the video streaming leaderboard. The site is now the third largest video streaming website sat just behind YouTube and Hulu. This is quite the success when you consider that the number one and two spots are dominated by dedicated video streaming websites, whereas this is just one element of the Facebook platform. By no means are Facebook a current competitor to YouTube but the social networking site continues to grow worldwide and in the previous month Facebook only managed to sneak into the top ten – a huge month on month growth.

The overall online video market has stabilised recently with no notable increases or decreases since July. There was a modest growth from 11 billion video streams in September to 11.2 billion in October, but having said that, unique views have fallen slightly to 138.6 million from 139.3 million in the previous month.

Facebook, the UK’s most popular social network has been causing a stir with office bosses for a while now. The online and social networking phenomenon has caused such an impact that office workers are to be given a ‘Facebook break’.

The new rule is set to be imposed in some firms shortly in response to research suggesting Social Networks are affecting employee productivity.

The break will be offered similarly to the 10 minute breaks granted to smokers. It is hoped that by allowing employees time on the sites rather than an outright ban, that they will not spend work time visiting and updating their Facebook accounts.

Giles Ridgeway, a leading consultant at Employment Law Advisory Services (ELAS) says:

“They feel some staff are failing to do the job they’re paid for because they’re spending too much time on such websites,” he said. “Some have said it appears to be a habit similar to smokers needing their fix of nicotine.”

Mr Ridgeway says that social networking sites are not a part of workers “legal entitlement” and therefore it is up to bosses to take this matter in their own hands.

He said enquiries about how to control what some firms have described as “a new media menace” had been growing since the turn of the year.

Workers are even at risk of losing their jobs if this rule is not adhered to.

“In days past, staff would have gathered around the office tea trolley for a quick chat. Now, they can talk to friends on the other side of the globe from their desks,” he added.

“But to remain able to do so means committing to doing the job they’re employed for. If they don’t and bosses take exception to what they believe to be an abuse, they could find themselves out of work and companies would be well within their rights to take such action.”
