This week Instagram are trialling a new way for businesses to promote their products in-app.

At the moment, when users browsing through their Instagram feed and see a product that catches their eye, they have to leave the app, head to the brand website and then search for the product onsite. This is a clunky user journey that presents numerous obstacles to conversion.

The new process that Instagram is trialling uses their tagging feature to enable users to access a detailed product view with pricing information in-app. To make the purchase, the user can just tap the “shop now” link to be taken directly to the product page on the retailer’s website – eliminating many of the steps in the journey.

The trial is currently taking place with 20 US-based retailers on Instagram’s iOS app, with plans to expand internationally, as well as to explore additional options such as product recommendations and the ability to save content for later viewing.

If successful, these new features could become an integral part of retailer’s m-commerce strategies in the future, so we’ll be keeping a close eye on how this develops.
