International Women’s Day
Today is International Women’s Day, and to mark the occasion we’re celebrating the achievements of all of our amazing women at Clicky!
We’re lucky to have a 50/50 gender split making up our team of highly talented individuals. The workplace is naturally balanced without having to place a focus on gender, however we have acknowledge there is a challenge with women in development roles.
We’ve caught up with a handful of our Clicky ladies to discuss their, achievements, careers, advice and what inspires them.

What has been your biggest achievement?
Rhian: This is a tough one…I hate talking about my achievements… probably becoming part of the management team at Clicky. I joined Clicky almost 5 years ago as a digital designer and it’s been so brilliant to have seen the agency grow. Being able to help shape that makes me really proud.
Bryony: Completing my undergraduate Masters Degree in Computer Science at Lancaster University has definitely been my biggest achievement to date. My degree introduced me to web development, working within a digital agency and set me on the career path I’m still on today. I loved my four years at Lancaster and all the hard work was 100% worth it when I collected my degree certificate. It still astounds me that I got my degree from a University that’s often ranked in the top 10 in the UK.
Heather: Giving birth to my beautiful son 🙂
Laura: Having 2 strong-willed daughters who are kind, confident and forthright

What is the proudest moment of your career?
Rhian: I have recently worked with the design team to set up the first design networking event in Chester, Design Yeah. As someone who isn’t a natural presenter, it really pushed me out of my comfort zone. The event was really successful and it was fantastic to bring like minded creatives together and create a real sense of community within the city. Watch this space for our next event.
Bryony: As a developer some of my proudest moments are when I launch websites. Knowing there are sites out there that I built will always be a source of pride for me, especially when someone says “Oh you built that it’s a great website!”
Heather: Joining Clicky as a Digital Marketing Executive and working hard to achieve 3 promotions throughout the past 4.5 years.
Laura: I am proud every day at Clicky – I don’t have one pinnacle moment. I am proud to be part of this dynamic, creative wonderful team.
Claire: It is really difficult to pick one moment, there have been so many moments along the way, my first promotion, moving to Australia to take up a new, more senior role with much bigger responsibilities – far from home, being part of the journey of other people – recruiting them into a business, helping them thrive and develop into different, quite often more senior, roles. I could go on…
Any advice for women?
Rhian: Don’t be afraid to be a little bit selfish – Look after yourself, take some time once a week to treat yourself to lunch, alone. A little bit of ‘me time’ does wonders for the mind and productivity.
Bryony: During freshers week at University I was asked what course I’d be studying. When I responded with Computer Science the other person laughed and said no really what are you studying. If you have a career path you want to follow in life don’t let anyone stop you because they think you can’t or because at the moment it may be a male dominated profession. Sometimes you just need to crack on and show them you can do it and do it well.
Heather: Hard work pays off!
Laura: Be proud to be you. I spent too long when I was younger not saying what I thought. Being older is great because you feel more confident in yourself but if I could go back and feel like this then, it would have been liberating and would have made me more effective at work. Be authentic and bring your whole self to work (but keep professional).
Claire: Be yourself, bring your whole self to work, take responsibility for your job (own it), treat people how you would like to be treated.

How do you manage a work/ life balance?
Rhian: Over the past couple of months I have been following on a strict morning routine. It starts with a big glass of water and I then take time to evaluate my goals, my wins from the previous day and my focus for the day ahead. I then remind myself of the things I am grateful for and the reasons why. It puts my whole day into perspective and makes it impossible to have a bad start to the day!
Bryony: Making sure I take time away from development and looking at code on my laptop is always a big thing for me. So at weekends and in the evenings I’ll make sure I spend some time doing other things; taking a walk, watching a film, reading a book or baking a cake are just some of the ways I make sure that I have time to unwind. Everybody needs some time to relax!
Heather: I protect my time as much as I can. I schedule tasks across the month to give myself enough time to achieve what I need to, so when I go home I can enjoy time with my family.
I follow Stephen Covey’s Habit 3 – put first things first. A constant prioritising list in my head at any one time.
Laura: Concentrate on what you are doing – if you are with your family be fully with them. If you are at work be fully at work.
Never put things off – it builds up.
Do everything in advance – plan way ahead and then you will never be stressed – at work or with your children.
Claire: With, I hope some common sense. Communication is really important – manage others expectations to enable you to achieve a balance. Keep control of your diary and learn to say no sometimes. Exercise/remember to take short breaks.
Do you have any mantra or quote that you constantly refer back to or use when you are feeling low?
Rhian: ‘If you’re tired, learn to rest, NOT quit’ – Banksy.
‘Set some goals. Stay quiet about them. Smash them. Clap for your own damn self’
Bryony: “Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.” ― Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and “Try to be a rainbow in someone else’s cloud.” – Maya Angelou. Both echo the same sentiments to me but in different ways. Sometimes you just need to remember that happiness is there no matter how bad something seems and sometimes you need to help others to see that too.
Heather: ‘You get in life what you have the courage to ask for’
Laura: Get it done, everything is sort-out-able
Claire: Don’t worry if today isn’t going well, tomorrow is a new day.

Who inspires you?
Rhian: Sophie Amoruso, former CEO of Nasty Gal and founder of the #GirlBoss movement. I read her book early on in my career and I still reference it all of the time. On a day-to-day basis, it would have to be the Clicky team. There is so much talent, creativity and genuine enthusiasm in this one building, that it motivates me every day.
Bryony: One of the most inspirational people to me has always been my older sister (queue the aww’s). At school she was the person who would say they wouldn’t do any further education as her dyslexia always made learning a little bit harder for her than others. Fast forward a couple of years and she completed college and gained both a bachelor’s degree and then a masters degree. She’s one of the hardest working people I know and when she sets her mind to something you know she’ll succeed at it!
Heather: Princess Diana, She used her status to help as many people as possible across the world and was involved in a lot of charity campaigns. I always want to help people whenever I can.
Laura: Sheryl Sandberg if I have to name one well known person. I am a podcast addict so many many podcasts inspire me. Most of all my family – all of them – from my husband and children to my siblings and parents.
Claire: Lots of people – colleagues I work with closely day to day at all levels within the Agency, my gorgeous boys, early in my career I was lucky to, within a short space of time, have 2 bosses (with female) who were great to work for – confident, well regarded, great at the technical aspects of there jobs!
