ChatGPT ads are coming to the UK: when can all advertisers actually buy them?
ChatGPT started showing ads to US users in February and opened self-serve buying to advertisers of all sizes in May. Now the pilot is heading to the UK. Matt Jones gives the practical paid-media read on what these ads are, who sees them, and the honest answer on when all UK advertisers can actually buy them.
It is happening. ChatGPT, the tool half your team now opens before they open Google, is becoming an ad platform. OpenAI started showing sponsored results to US users in February, opened a self-serve buying tool to American advertisers of all sizes in May, and has now confirmed the pilot is heading to the UK. Here is the practical read on what these ads actually are, who sees them, and the honest answer to the question every advertiser is asking: when can I buy them here.
What ChatGPT ads actually are
Forget banner ads. These are sponsored results that sit inside the conversation. When you ask ChatGPT something with commercial intent (best running shoes for flat feet, a CRM for a small team, somewhere to stay in Lisbon) it can surface a clearly labelled, lightly tinted sponsored box, usually at the foot of the answer. OpenAI has been firm on one point: the ads do not change the organic answer above them. The model gives you its genuine response, and the sponsored result sits alongside it rather than rewriting it.
Our take: this is closer to a search ad than a social ad. The trigger is intent, not interruption. Someone has actively asked a buying question and the sponsored result answers it. That is the most valuable real estate in advertising, and it is exactly why this launch matters more than the average new placement.
Who actually sees them
Not everyone. Ads only show to logged-in adult users on the free tier and the cheaper ChatGPT Go plan. Anyone on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Education stays completely ad-free, because they are already paying for the experience. So the audience you are reaching is the large, casual, non-paying base rather than the power users who have handed OpenAI a subscription.
For advertisers: that is a big, mainstream consumer audience, but it skews away from the heaviest professional users. Worth keeping in mind when you model who you are actually putting your message in front of.
How the buying works
The US rollout has moved fast. In its new ways to buy ChatGPT ads update, OpenAI set out two routes in. You can go through partners (it named the big four agency holding companies, Dentsu, Omnicom, Publicis and WPP), or you can use a new beta self-serve Ads Manager where you register as an advertiser, add payment, set budgets, bids and pacing, upload creative and report on performance yourself. The big launch brands (Adobe, Ford and Target were among the first names in) are no longer the only ones who can buy. You can bid on a CPM basis (cost per thousand impressions) or CPC (cost per click), and crucially OpenAI has added conversion tracking through an ad pixel and a Conversions API, so you can measure leads, bookings and sales rather than just impressions. There is a privacy reassurance too: advertisers do not get access to your conversations or personal details. Early reports put CPCs in the few-pounds-per-click range and CPMs notably higher than display, which fits a high-intent placement.
Our take: the measurement piece is the part we are watching hardest. The first advertisers struggled to prove the ads worked, and a channel you cannot attribute is a channel you cannot scale. A pixel plus conversion API is table stakes for any serious paid platform, and the fact OpenAI shipped it quickly tells you they want this taken seriously by performance marketers, not just brand teams chasing a novelty placement.
So when do they reach the UK?
On 7 May 2026, OpenAI confirmed it is expanding the ChatGPT ads pilot into the UK, alongside Brazil, Japan, South Korea and Mexico, after earlier launches in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The wording was that ads would start appearing for users in these markets over the coming weeks. Dave Dugan, OpenAI's head of global ads solutions, framed it as expanding following strong interest from businesses wanting to reach users in a more conversational, intent-driven environment.
So UK users on the free and Go tiers should start seeing sponsored results through mid-2026. That is the consumer side. The advertiser side is the more important question for anyone reading this.
The honest answer on access for all UK advertisers
Here is where we will be straight with you, because there is a lot of breathless coverage that blurs two different things. A market getting ads (users seeing them) is not the same as a market getting open self-serve buying (any advertiser being able to log in and run a campaign).
In the US, those two milestones were roughly three months apart: consumer ads went live in February, and the self-serve Ads Manager (still a beta that OpenAI is gradually opening to more businesses) arrived in May. OpenAI has confirmed the UK is getting the consumer pilot in the coming weeks from early May, but it has not yet committed to a date for open, self-serve access for every UK advertiser. The early UK inventory is likely to run through OpenAI's sales team and its agency partners (the holding companies named above) first, with broad self-serve following once the pilot beds in.
Our take: if the US is the template, expect UK users to be seeing ChatGPT ads through summer 2026, and expect genuinely open self-serve access for all UK advertisers to follow later in the year rather than on day one. Treat any earlier access as a managed pilot you apply for, not a product you can simply switch on. We would love to be proven wrong with a faster timeline, and we will update this if OpenAI commits to firm dates.
What to do right now
You do not need to wait for the buying tools to open to get ready. Three things are worth doing today.
Register your interest. OpenAI is taking sign-ups for advertisers in the new markets at openai.com/advertisers. Getting on the list early is how you find out the moment UK self-serve opens, and how you get a shot at any managed pilot before it is generally available. We are doing the same legwork: we are already building accounts so clients are live on day one. Join our early-access list on the Clicky ChatGPT Ads page and we will email you the moment UK inventory is buyable, with none of the noise in between.
Get your brand answerable. Sponsored results sit next to organic AI answers, and the same content and structure that helps ChatGPT understand and recommend you organically is what makes you credible in the paid slot too. This is the AEO and GEO work (answer engine and generative engine optimisation) that we have been banging on about: clear, structured, factual content about what you do, who you serve and why you are a good answer to a buying question.
Sort your measurement. Because the platform leans on a pixel and conversion API, the advertisers who win early will be the ones whose tracking and conversion setup is already clean. If your attribution is held together with tape, fix that before a new channel exposes it.
The bottom line
ChatGPT ads are a genuinely new high-intent channel, not a gimmick, and the UK is firmly on the roadmap. UK users will likely be seeing them through mid-2026, but open self-serve access for all UK advertisers is most realistically a later-in-2026 prospect, following the same managed-pilot-then-open pattern we saw in the US. The smart move is not to wait. Register your interest, get your brand and your content genuinely answerable, and make sure your measurement is ready, so that when the buying tools do open here you are spending on day one rather than scrambling to set up.
If you want a hand getting AEO-ready or want us to manage your ChatGPT ads the moment they are buyable in the UK, that is exactly the sort of thing we do. Take a look at our ChatGPT Ads service, join the early-access list while you are there, or get in touch.
