ChatGPT ads can now optimise for conversions: what it means before it reaches the UK

OpenAI is rolling out conversion-optimised ChatGPT campaigns from 5 June. Here is what the shift to performance means for UK advertisers, and how to get your tracking ready before the UK rollout.

ChatGPT ads can now optimise for conversions: what it means before it reaches the UK

A few weeks ago ChatGPT ads got budgets, geo-targeting and proper call-to-action buttons. The platform started to look like something you could plan around rather than just watch. Today it takes the bigger step. From 5 June, OpenAI is rolling out conversion-optimised campaigns inside its Ads Manager, and that is the moment ChatGPT ads stop being an awareness experiment and start behaving like a performance channel.

In plain terms: until now you could put your brand in front of people inside ChatGPT, but you were largely buying attention. With a conversion objective, the platform optimises towards people actually doing the thing you care about, a purchase, a lead, a sign-up. That is the same mechanic that makes Google and Meta work as direct-response channels, and now it sits inside the answer engine a growing chunk of your customers use every day.

What's actually changed

The headline is the conversion objective. OpenAI's Ads Manager, at ads.openai.com, can now optimise delivery towards conversion events rather than just impressions or clicks. That turns ChatGPT ads from a top-of-funnel awareness play into something you can hold to a cost-per-acquisition target and compare, like for like, against your other performance platforms.

To make that work, you need conversion signal flowing in. That means having the OpenAI Pixel on your site, or sending events through the Conversions API, so the platform can see what happens after the click and learn from it. Advertisers who had at least one conversion event flowing before 1 June qualified for the early access window opening today. No tracking, no optimisation. It really is that simple, and it is the bit most brands underestimate.

The catch for UK advertisers

Here is the honest part, and it is the same caveat as last time. The self-serve beta is still US-only. If you are running campaigns aimed at Leeds or Edinburgh, you cannot switch this on this morning, and OpenAI has not put a date on UK availability.

So this is not a "spend money today" moment for British advertisers. It is a "get your house in order" moment. Ad platforms almost always prove the mechanics in the US first, then open up. The conversion objective is the last big piece a performance channel needs, which tells you the direction of travel is set. The brands that understand how this works, and that have clean conversion tracking ready to go, will be the ones live within days of the UK switch flipping rather than scrambling for weeks afterwards.

Why this matters beyond one feature

Step back and the pattern is hard to miss. People increasingly start their research inside an AI assistant. That same assistant is now carrying ads, and those ads can optimise for sales. The gap between being mentioned by ChatGPT for free and paying to appear in ChatGPT is closing fast, exactly the way paid and organic have sat side by side on Google for twenty years.

That is why we keep saying paid media and GEO are not two separate jobs anymore. Optimising your content so ChatGPT cites you, and buying conversion-led placement inside ChatGPT, are different disciplines pointing at the same person at the same moment. Brands that plan them as one visibility strategy, rather than two budgets that never speak to each other, are going to have a real edge as these platforms grow up.

What to do now

You do not need to rush, but you should not sit on your hands either. A few sensible moves:

If you have a US arm or run US activity, this is a fair moment to plan a small, well-controlled conversion test now that the objective exists. For everyone else, get the plumbing right: make sure your conversion tracking, Pixel and Conversions API setup are clean and reliable, because that is what every performance platform, ChatGPT included, runs on. And whatever you do on the paid side, keep your organic AI visibility strong, because being the brand ChatGPT recommends without you paying a penny is still the best seat in the house.

The platforms changing how people search are the same ones quietly building serious ad products on top. Getting ready for both at once is just good planning.

At Clicky we help brands stay visible across traditional search and the new wave of AI answer engines, from paid media to GEO.
