Recent data from SimilarWeb highlights a significant trend in the generative AI space. Over the past year, ChatGPT’s market share has decreased by approximately 20%, settling at 68%. In contrast, Google’s Gemini has seen a rapid uptake, growing 7% in just the last month.

The power of integration

While ChatGPT remains the dominant player, Google is gaining ground by leveraging its vast ecosystem. The primary driver here is convenience rather than just model capability. By embedding Gemini directly into daily workflows—Google Docs, Gmail, and Android—Google has removed the friction of navigating to a separate app.

For the average user, the ability to draft emails or summarise documents within their existing window is proving to be a decisive factor.
