Choosing the right CMS
There are many content management systems out there, each with its own benefits. Here at Clicky Media, we build most of our sites with WordPress, and use Magento for any e-commerce websites.
It’s Clicky Media’s favourite for a reason. WordPress powers over 67,000,000 websites worldwide (as of June 2013) and doesn’t have any fixed functionality or design features. WordPress allows us to strip it back to basics to build a completely bespoke website, and we can then adapt it to make every part of the website editable. The only drawback of WordPress is it’s lack of e-commerce functionality.
Umbraco runs on a Windows server rather than Linux, and is used by ASP.NET developers. It powers some of the UK’s largest websites, including Microsoft and Peugeot. Umbraco is completely flexible, and has an easy to use administrator panel for easy updating. Umbraco works best with large websites with over a hundred pages and resources, however requires a lot more development time.
One of the world’s most used e-commerce platforms. Magento is feature-rich, meaning there is a lot of functionality that is already built in for us to use. There is also a large amount of support available for developers due to its being an open-source platform. Magento is completely scaleable and can be used for any project, whether you have 10 or 100,000 products to sell online.
Drupal is completely flexible. It has a very wide range of modules that can help make every region editable and add new features to any website. However, the administrator panel doesn’t look quite as nice as WordPress, and any changes or feature adding will need to be done by an experienced developer.
Complete with an easy to use administrator panel. Joomla will power a range of database driven sites, however if you’re looking to add functionality and features in the future, then WordPress is a better choice. Joomla is heavily adaptable, however there is less support available for developers.
