Clicky Island Discs / David
Inspired by the legendary Desert Island Discs of BBC radio, we’ve asked the Clicky team; before they’re castaway on a remote desert island in the middle of nowhere with only themselves as company, what 5 songs, book and luxury item would they take with them?
It’s been a while since we’ve done a Clicky Island Discs, so we thought we’d resurrect it, starting with our amazing Digital Account Manager David! Over to you Dave…
I can actually understand why people find this a difficult exercise now! At one point, I had about thirty songs on this list, but I’ve managed to whittle it down to the five I think I’d most need if I was stranded on a desert island. Sorry Kanye, but you had to go.
1. 7 by Catfish and the Bottlemen (Live at T in the Park)
These guys are actually from the same area as me. I remember seeing them a few times in little pubs and bars, and I used to work with the guitarist. Somewhere, I have their first demo on one of those blank Asda CDs that you could write your own music on. Now look at them, touring the US. That’s a helpful metaphor on a desert island, isn’t it? If they can get out of some rural village in Wales and end up playing Glastonbury, then I can definitely get off that island.
2. Live Forever by Oasis (Live)
I went to their last gig in 2009, and they played a great show, then Liam threw a fruit bowl at Noel so they split the next morning. Love them or hate them, the Gallagher’s are a class act. Noel’s fifty this year, and I don’t think he’s ever not been cool. He once described Liam as “rude, arrogant, intimidating and lazy. He’s the angriest man you’ll ever meet. He’s like a man with a fork in a world of soup.” For that alone, Noel deserves his place on this list.
3. Falling Down by Scarlett Johnansson
It’s Scarlett Johnansson singing Tom Waits songs. It honestly doesn’t get much cooler than this.
4. 45 by The Gaslight Anthem (Live)
These guys are like a familiar home that I keep returning to. Every record they’ve put out is just a decent, fun, rock album. The singer, Brian Fallon, is constantly compared to Bruce Springsteen and it’s easy to see why. Also, given my luxury item, I think I’d like to have some Gaslight Anthem to play along to.
5. On Top by The Killers (Live with Danielle Haim)
I know it’s another live version, but it’s Brandon Flowers in a Hawaiian shirt with Danielle Haim on drums, it’s cool.
A Life in Letters by F. Scott Fitzgerald
Despite being a total bookworm, this was actually a pretty straightforward decision. It’s a collection of his letters to writers such as Ernest Hemingway, Gertrude Stein, and his wife Zelda. There’s a bit of everything in here, but I think I had the most fun reading the letters between him and Hemingway. There was a very real bromance going on there, and it’s fascinating to read two of the most talented writers of all time chatting about their frankly unimaginable lifestyles.
Are we allowed to cheat, and request a helicopter and pilot? If not, I’d probably just go for my guitar. It’ll keep me busy, and as I’m on a deserted island, it would be nice to actually turn the amp up all the way without the walls shaking. So, I have five songs, a book, and a guitar on a desert island? I think I’d last about four hours.
