Clicky Island Discs / Shannon
Inspired by the BBC’s Desert Island Discs, the format of Clicky Island Discs is pretty similar. We’ve asked the Clicky team; before they’re castaway on a remote desert island in the middle of nowhere with only themselves as company, what 5 songs, book and luxury item would they take with them?
I’ve had the opportunity to check out everyone else’s Clicky Island Discs as I was posting them on our blog, and now it’s my turn to write mine! I must say, I didn’t realise how difficult it would be to choose just 5 songs (it’s really not many at all!), now I know how all of the others felt and it’s not nice – sorry guys!
1. Secret Smile by Semisonic
My reason for choosing this song is quite simple – I LOVE it! I’m not quite sure why, but this has been my favourite song for a long time and it always makes me smile – which is apt considering the song title.
2. To the Moon and Back by Savage Garden
I like to sing along to this song, rather loudly and out of tune (I am the worst singer, seriously bad – think of the worst X-Factor audition you’ve seen and then times by 10) – considering I’ll be on an uninhabited desert island, there will be no one around to complain about the noise and cheesy song choice. I believe I used to sit and listen to this through my mums headphones as a child, maybe that’s why I like it now.
3. Tie Me Down by Jack Savoretti
I recently signed up for the free 3 month Apple Music trial, and they very kindly recommended Jack Savoretti to me. I can safely say it’s the best recommendation I’ve ever received, his album ‘Written in Scars’ is brilliant, the best album I’ve heard in a long time. ‘Tie Me Down’ is my favourite song from his album, (although it was a tough decision because they’re all great) because I love the tune – I just start tapping along, which can be highly annoying.
4. Sun Goes Down by Arctic Monkeys
I knew before I began writing my Clicky Island Discs that I would have the Arctic Monkeys on here, but I wasn’t quite sure which song I would end up choosing. They are my go to band, and it was a tough choice between choosing a song from their newest album (AM) or their debut (Whatever People Say I am, That’s What I’m Not) – the styles are very different, and it usually depends on what mood I’m in, as to what album I listen to. In the end I decided to go with Sun Goes Down, because it’s one of the songs I always turn the volume up to and sing along to (and dance, if I’m not driving – don’t dance and drive kids!), and lets be honest I needed a more up beat song on my list!
5. A Thousand Trees by Stereophonics
My final song was going to be Wonderwall by Oasis, however Mark had that on his list (for the same reason I would have chosen it, it reminds me of university – it was always the end of night song), instead I decided to mix things up a bit and choose something different. I went with A Thousand Trees by Stereophonics (not because I’m Welsh) but because I like to play this very loudly in the car and scream along, and I think I could scream along to this quite happily on a desert island too!
Hush Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick
No this is not the best piece of literature ever written, and yes it is a teen romance novel… but I annoyingly love it, and I shouldn’t admit this but I’ve read it far more times than is necessary *hangs head in shame*. I’m not usually one for romance-y things, but this book is about a tall, dark and handsome Harley riding fallen angel, so I made an exception and years later I’m still making the exception as it remains my most read book *hang head in shame – again*. I figured if I’m on a desert island, I want something a bit more light hearted and easy to read (I’m going to be severely dehydrated, so concentration levels would be lacking) and this book does the trick!
A deck of cards
I thought long and hard about this, because it’s probably the toughest decision, and I mean the others were all difficult. I originally thought of taking something useful like sun cream, a fire lighter or a pen knife, but then I thought nahh, I’ll take a deck of cards. Not only am I pretty decent at solitaire (so I can keep myself occupied when I’m not wrestling crocodiles and such) but I’ve always fancied learning some magic tricks, and I think I’ll have plenty of time to perfect at least one trick before the Clicky drone locates me.
