#clickypeople / Meet Rich

Rich very kindly made time for a quick chat about his job role and what it’s like to work at Clicky…
How long have you been working at Clicky, and what made you apply?
I started working at Clicky in January this year, so I’ve been here three months now. I’d been doing web development in my spare time for about two years, and wanted to get paid for doing it because I really enjoy it. I applied for Clicky and got a interview at the end of last year. It’s the first agency I’ve worked for and my first job doing development work.
How are you finding Clicky life?
It’s great! As I said I’ve been doing web development in my spare time as a hobby and freelanced for a couple of years, but it’s great to have the opportunity to work with the other people like I do here.
What’s the project you’ve most enjoyed working on?
I’ve been working on a project called Amazed by Science, which is a festival in the North West that teaches kids all about science. The website is aimed at children so it’s really interactive with lots of animations and cool things like that. It’s been really fun to work on! The design is brilliant, so I’ve learnt loads doing it, which is always a good thing for me to enjoy a project and learn at the same time.
What advice would you give to anyone considering web development as a career path?
Just write code and develop websites whenever you can. Make them bigger and bigger and bigger, and get that experience because that’s what really counts. I didn’t go to university, I just learnt in my spare time and taught myself, which I think is the best way. Technology moves so fast that it can become out-dated quite quickly, so if you teach yourself you can stay up to date with the latest trends and techniques.
What’s your favourite thing about working at Clicky and what have learnt since working here?
The atmosphere and the people are just so friendly and supportive. I’ve learnt so much since I’ve started. It’s been a really great experience so far. I’ve learnt a lot about WordPress, which is the content management system we use. It’s a really powerful tool! I’ve also learnt more animation, and ways to make a website more slick, interesting and user friendly.
What does a standard working day involve?
A standard day for me is 90% development. Writing code and emails, talking to clients, internal meetings, scoping out projects and just getting to grips with whatever project I’m working on at the minute. But the majority is writing code.
What project are you currently working on at the moment?
I’m currently working on a website for Tweak Productions, who are a digital retouching agency, they asked us to do a new website for them to show off some of their work.
Work related questions out the way, it’s time to know the guy behind the computer…
When you’re not clicking away in front of your computer what are you doing?
Playing guitar a lot of the time, I’m quite a keen musician so that’s a real passion. I used to do gigs when I was younger but I kind of grew out of it as I got older but music is still always there in my spare time.
What’s the first thing you’d buy if you won the lottery?
I’d buy a really nice new acoustic guitar, like a Martin or a Taylor that was over the top and unnecessarily expensive.
What kind of music do you listen to and what’s your desert island disk?
I generally prefer Rock or Indie music, and more acoustic music like Bon Iver. My desert island disk would have to be Hurt by Johnny Cash, the video is really moving and well done.
What’s the one TV show you’d re-watch again and again?
Breaking Bad. I’ve already watched it twice all the way through and it’s absolutely brilliant.
If you could travel anywhere in the world where would you go?
New York, I’ve been there before and it’s just the best place I’ve ever been. It feels like the centre of the universe because it’s so alive. I really enjoyed my trip there, so I’d definitely go back. To anywhere in America really, I’d love to road trip across America.
What’s your go to app in the app store?
Spotify, because the design and usability is brilliant and I use it everyday without fail.
