Facebook introduces new 'Safety Check' feature

Facebook have just announced a new ‘Safety Check’ feature that allows you to connect with friends and family during a natural disaster.
With location settings enabled, Facebook will be able to detect if you are near a natural disaster and will send you a notification to ask if you are safe. You will be given the option to confirm if you are indeed safe or if you are not in the affected area. This will then inform your friends and family via a notification and in their News Feed. Safety Check also allows you to check on others in the affected area and you will be sent a notification when your loved ones confirm they are safe.
The new feature comes after the devastating 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Facebook recognised that people were taking to social media to stay connected with their friends and family during the disaster and so have created this new easy-to-use feature.
The aim of Safety Check is to put people’s minds at ease just by the tap of a button rather than trying to write and post a status during the disaster.
Safety Check will be available on feature phone devices across Android, iOS, and on desktop.
With 829 million daily active Facebook users, this is the perfect platform to stay connected when disaster strikes.
