Ads in Google AI Mode are coming to the UK in Q4

Google has confirmed that ads in AI Mode will reach the UK before the end of 2026. Here is what Google has actually said, what the new ads look like inside AI answers, and the 7 things UK advertisers should do before they go live.

Ads in Google AI Mode are coming to the UK in Q4

Google has confirmed that ads in AI Mode, its conversational search experience, will reach the UK before the end of 2026. The announcement came on 28 October 2026 from Shashi Thakur, VP and GM of Google Search Ads and Ads on Google Experiences, on Google's official Ads & Commerce blog.

Until now, UK users have seen AI Mode answers without sponsored placements. That is about to change, and for UK advertisers it marks the biggest shift in where search ads appear since Shopping ads arrived. Here is what Google has actually said, what the new ads look like, and what you should do before they go live.

What Google announced

In its official post, Google confirmed it is now scaling ads in AI Mode across 10 markets: Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore. For the UK, the key line reads: "we plan to expand to additional locales, including Brazil, Mexico, and the United Kingdom" in Q4 2026.

The other points from Google's post:

  • No fixed UK date. Google has committed to Q4 2026 but not to a specific day, so UK ads could appear at any point between now and the end of December.
  • Multiturn ads, US first. Google is launching ads that can appear on follow-up questions within the same AI Mode conversation. These are US only for now.
  • Clear labelling. Ads will carry a "Sponsored" label, and Google says it will keep testing new formats.
  • Longer, richer queries. Citing its own US AI Mode Report (May 2026), Google says AI Mode queries are on average 3 times longer than traditional searches.
  • Comparable click-through. Based on internal US data from 20 August to 3 September 2026, Google reports that sponsored and organic product listings in AI Mode already achieve similar click-through rates.

It is worth noting that both performance figures are Google's own US data, so UK results may differ.

Why Google is moving so fast

The announcement landed on the same day as Alphabet's third quarter results, and the market reaction tells you why AI Mode ads matter so much to Google. As the BBC reported, Alphabet shares fell more than 12% on 29 October 2026, their worst day ever, wiping around half a trillion dollars off the company's value.

Search revenue grew 12%, almost 3 percentage points below market forecasts. On the earnings call, Google's Chief Business Officer Philipp Schindler named lower monetisation in AI Mode as one of the reasons search growth slowed. In other words, people are using AI Mode heavily, but it is not yet earning Google as much per search as traditional results.

For advertisers, the message is clear. Google has every commercial reason to roll out AI Mode ads quickly, expand the formats and steer budgets towards the campaign types that power them. UK businesses should expect this to move faster than previous Google changes, not slower.

What AI Mode ads look like

AI Mode ads are not the familiar 4 text ads stacked above organic results. They sit inside or alongside the AI-generated answer, and Google uses Gemini to shape the ad around what the person actually asked.

At Google Marketing Live on 20 May 2026, Google set out a new generation of Search ad formats. Describing Conversational Discovery ads, Google put it simply: "your ad answers a person's specific question."

Google also says the 2 AI Mode formats will include an independent AI explainer alongside the advertiser's creative, and that all formats will stay labelled "Sponsored". Google has not yet confirmed which of these formats will be available in the UK at launch, so expect sponsored text and Shopping placements first.

Why it matters for UK advertisers

The timing puts this in the middle of peak season. If UK ads go live before Christmas, retailers could see new placements appear during Black Friday and the run-up to the January sales.

  • Eligibility is likely to be automatic. Google's approach so far has been to serve AI Mode ads from existing campaigns rather than a new campaign type. Its own advice is to build on AI Max for Search, AI Max for Shopping and Performance Max to take advantage of the new formats. If your account relies on tightly controlled exact match keywords, you may simply not show.
  • Your ad copy may be rewritten for you. Gemini generates and tailors creative to each query. What it writes depends on your website, product feed and assets, so weak landing pages and thin feeds will show up quickly.
  • Search behaviour is changing. With queries running around 3 times longer in AI Mode, people are describing problems and needs rather than typing 2 or 3 keywords. Campaigns need to be built around intent, not just keyword lists.
  • Reporting will lag behind. As with AI Overviews, expect limited visibility of exactly which AI Mode conversations triggered your ads. Measurement plans should focus on conversions and incrementality rather than search terms alone.
  • Organic and paid now overlap. If sponsored listings achieve similar click-through to organic ones, as Google reports in the US, brands not visible in either will lose ground fast.

What to do before UK launch

  1. Audit your campaign structure. Check which Search campaigns use broad match or AI Max, and whether Shopping and Performance Max campaigns are in good health. These are the routes Google points advertisers towards.
  2. Test AI Max for Search now. Run it as an experiment against your current setup, so you have a benchmark before AI Mode traffic arrives.
  3. Strengthen your product feed. Titles, descriptions, attributes and images feed directly into what Gemini says about your products. Fill the gaps and fix disapprovals.
  4. Improve landing page content. Gemini draws on your website to shape creative and, with Business Agent for Leads, to answer customer questions. Clear, detailed, accurate pages give it better material.
  5. Review brand safety and exclusions. Decide which queries, categories and claims you are comfortable with, and set guidelines and negative keywords accordingly.
  6. Agree how you will measure success. Set baselines for conversions, cost per acquisition and return on ad spend now, so any shift after launch is easy to spot.
  7. Watch your account notifications. Google has not given a UK date, so monitor Google Ads announcements and its Help Center for confirmation.

Our view

This is not a reason to panic, but it is a reason to act. The advertisers who benefit most from new Google placements are usually the ones whose accounts, feeds and websites are ready on day 1, not the ones who react 3 months later.

At Clicky, we have been preparing client accounts for AI-powered search throughout 2026. If you would like a quick review of how ready your Google Ads account is for AI Mode, get in touch with our team and we will tell you where you stand before the ads go live.
