Instagram advertising – the basics
Last year Instagram launched ads on their platform, and slowly sponsored ads have been emerging on their users’ news feeds.
What is a sponsored ad I hear you ask? A sponsored ad looks like any other video or photo that is uploaded to the platform, the only difference is the sponsored label where the time stamp would usually be situated.
Instagram said, ‘we want ads to be creative and engaging, so we’re starting with just a handful of brands that are already great members of the Instagram community’.
How do Instagram choose what content is shown?
Instagram use information they’ve gathered about the users, such as who they’ve followed and what pictures they’ve liked in order to tailor their sponsored ads to suit the individual user. If the account is connected via Facebook (their parent company) they can also use basic profile information and interests to improve the relevance of their ads.
If a user isn’t happy with the content being shown through the sponsored posts, there is a simple solution. All they need to do is click the bottom right hand icon (the three big dots) and it gives an option to provide feedback and hide the sponsored post. This feature allows Instagram to improve their adverts over time and learn more about what content their users find engaging.
What brands are currently advertising on Instagram?
Instagram say their ‘aim is to make any advertisements you see feel as natural to Instagram as the photo’s and videos many of you already enjoy from your favourite brands.’ That’s why they have only selected a handful of brand, that currently include: Adidas, Ben & Jerry’s, Burberry, General Electric, Lexus, Levi’s, Macy’s, Michael Kors, Paypal and Starwood.
What does the future hold?
Instagram do not have any plans to roll out their advertising to all companies anytime soon. They are starting slow in order to get the experience right for their ad partners and the Instagram community and they will let everyone know when they are ready to expand.
