Shopify eyewear store design: a glasses shop you can walk into

What if buying glasses online felt like walking into an opticians? SPEX is a UX experiment from Sprint: a made-up eyewear brand with a shop you can walk into, step up to a pair and buy from, built to sit on top of Shopify.

Shopify eyewear store design: a glasses shop you can walk into

Buying glasses online is strange. You scroll a grid of frames floating on white, squint at a 52mm measurement and try to imagine them on your face. In a good opticians you walk in, scan a wall of frames, pick up the one that catches your eye and look closer. So we built that.

SPEX is a made-up eyewear brand with a shop you can walk into. Have a go below. Hover over a ledge, click a pair to step up to it, pick your frame width and lenses and add it to your bag.

What you're looking at

You start on the pavement outside the SPEX store, a raw concrete shopfront covered in graffiti, and walk straight through the door to a wall of 10 frames on lit acrylic ledges. Hover over one and its ledge glows and its name appears above it. Click and the camera glides in until the frames fill the screen, with the colour, price, frame width and lens options beside them. The rest of the wall softens out of focus, so all your attention is on the pair in front of you.

From there you can flick through the whole collection, add a pair to your bag, or step back outside and walk in again.

Why glasses suit a wall

Eyewear is bought on looks first. People browse frames the way they browse a shop window: by shape, colour and attitude, long before they check a spec. A wall lets them do exactly that, with every frame visible at once and nothing hidden behind filters.

It also gives a brand room to have a personality. SPEX is meant to feel edgy, so the store has concrete, neon and graffiti outside and a calm, lit wall inside. A product grid can't do that.

How it would work on a real Shopify store

  • Live products. Every frame is a Shopify product, and every width and lens option a variant, so prices, stock and sold-out widths come straight from your inventory.
  • Lens options as add-ons. Clear, blue light and sun lenses change the price as you choose them, just as they would at checkout.
  • Shopify's own cart and checkout. Add to bag uses your Shopify cart, and checkout is the one your customers already trust, including Shop Pay and Apple Pay.
  • A new wall for every drop. Shot in your store or generated for the campaign, with a standard product grid alongside for search and accessibility.

How we made it

This is our second store you can walk into, after a sneaker wall, and glasses were harder. The brand, the frames, the shop and the walk-in film are all AI generated: the photos with Gemini, the film with Seedance. None of it exists, but for a real brand every part of it could be shot for real. A few things made it work:

  • Glasses are hard to fake. Thin metal, clear lenses and reflections are where AI images usually fall apart, so we tested a single wall first before making anything else.
  • Close-ups cut from the wall itself. Our first close-ups were shot straight on, but every pair on the wall sits at a slight angle, so they warped as you zoomed in. Instead each close-up is a high-resolution crop of the wall, so it lands exactly on the pair.
  • A walk-in that lands on the exact frame. The film ends on the wall itself, and its colours are matched to the photo, so there's no flash when you take over.
  • The door in the middle. Our first shopfront had the door off to one side, which meant the camera had to turn. Moving the door in line with the wall gave us one straight, steady walk in.
