UK Automotive Search Trends [May 2026]: What Britain's Car Searches Reveal
We pulled Semrush data on UK automotive search. Autotrader draws 5m searches a month, car-buying demand lifts around the March and September plate changes, and the EV shift is real but still early. Here is what it means for automotive brands in 2026.
Automotive is a vertical of giants: enormous brand marketplaces, an entire economy of car admin, and a slow-motion shift to electric. We pulled Semrush data across marketplaces, ownership, finance and EVs. The story is one of huge navigational demand, a uniquely British seasonal rhythm set by the number-plate calendar, and an electric transition that is real but still early.

Used-car platforms powered the gains. Cazoo rebounded hardest, Big Motoring World jumped, and reliability-led marques BMW and Toyota edged up while the rest of the market cooled.

Marketplaces and admin own the demand
Car search is dominated by two things: where to buy, and the paperwork of owning. "Autotrader" pulls around 5 million searches a month and "MOT check" 2.24 million, with "We Buy Any Car", "DVLA" and the newer marketplaces Cinch and Cazoo all commanding serious volume.
Our take: the marketplaces have aggregated buyer demand at a scale dealers cannot match head-on, and a huge share of the rest is functional admin search. For dealers and brands, that makes two things matter: a strong presence where buyers actually shop, and ownership of your own brand and local "near me" search, which is the demand you genuinely control. Competing with Autotrader on generic terms is a losing game, intercepting local and brand intent is not.
The number-plate calendar sets the rhythm
Britain buys cars to a calendar almost no other country shares: the twice-yearly plate change. Car-buying demand lifts around the March and September plate changes, the two moments when a new registration makes a car feel new.
Our take: the plate change is a built-in, predictable demand event, and it should anchor the automotive media plan the way the golden quarter anchors retail. The dealers who win the plate-change months are the ones building interest in the weeks before, when finance and model research begins, rather than waiting for the registration date itself. Miss the run-up and you are bidding into peak competition with no momentum.
The EV shift is real, but still early
Electrification is coming through in the data, but it is not yet the main event. "Tesla" leads EV-related search at 301,000, but the generic "electric cars", "hybrid cars" and "EV charging" terms are still modest next to the overall market.
Our take: EV demand is a fast-growing slice rather than the whole pie, which is exactly why it is an opportunity. The brands and dealers building authority on the questions buyers are nervous about now, charging, range, running costs, are positioning for a transition that will only accelerate. Owning the EV-education content today is cheap insurance against a market that is shifting under everyone's feet.
Where the expensive clicks are
The priciest automotive clicks cluster around money and reassurance. "Car finance" tops the list at £7.08 a click and "car warranty" at £6.03, with premium brands and the "we buy any car" resale terms close behind.
Our take: finance and warranty are where the margin and the competition both concentrate, so they reward tight targeting and clean measurement. Knowing which clicks lead to a funded sale, not just a form fill, is what lets a dealer bid confidently on terms this expensive, the same discipline we see paying off in our UK finance search breakdown.
What this means for automotive brands in 2026
The UK automotive search market rewards a clear plan. Marketplaces and admin own the demand, so win where buyers shop and own your local and brand search. The plate-change calendar is predictable, so build momentum before March and September. The EV shift is early but real, so own the education content now. And the expensive money terms demand measurement. If you want help turning this into an automotive plan that is ready before the plates change, get in touch.
