UK Professional Services Search Trends [May 2026]: What Britain's Legal and Accountancy Searches Reveal
We pulled Semrush data on UK professional-services search. These are the most expensive clicks on Google (payroll £27.82, no win no fee £27.59), demand spikes every January for tax and divorce, and the rest is steady and intensely local. Here is what it means for firms in 2026.
Professional services is where UK search gets quietly, ruthlessly expensive. We pulled Semrush data across legal, accountancy and advisory queries. Three things define the vertical: the costliest clicks anywhere on Google, a powerful pull towards local "near me" intent, and a demand curve that spikes hard every January.

The most expensive clicks on Google
Nowhere are clicks pricier. "Payroll services" commands £27.82 a click and "no win no fee" £27.59, with conveyancing and divorce solicitors both above £12. A single click on some of these terms costs more than a decent meal out.
Our take: at £25-plus a click, paid search is a high-stakes game and waste is brutal. One mistargeted click is real money gone, so the firms that win are obsessive about match types, negatives and, above all, conversion tracking that ties spend to actual instructions, not just form fills. At these prices, the cheapest enquiry is always the one you earned through reputation and organic visibility rather than the auction.
January is the reckoning
Professional-services demand has a sharp annual rhythm, and it peaks in January. Two forces collide: the Self Assessment tax deadline on the 31st, and the new-year surge in life admin and life decisions. "Tax return" hits its annual high, and so does "divorce solicitor".
Our take: January is the single most important month in the calendar for accountants and family lawyers alike, and the demand is utterly predictable. The firms that prepare content, capacity and campaigns through December capture it at a far better cost than those reacting in late January. It is the same predictable-deadline dynamic we see with ISA season in our UK finance search breakdown.
Beyond January, demand is steady and local
Outside the January spike, professional-services demand is reassuringly steady, more like property than retail. And much of it is intensely local: "solicitors near me" and "accountants near me" show that for most people, choosing a professional starts with proximity.
Our take: a steady, local market rewards an always-on, locally-optimised presence over burst campaigns. Strong local SEO, a complete and reviewed Google Business Profile, and consistent visibility matter more than a seasonal blitz, because the enquiry comes when a client's life event triggers it, not when your campaign is live. Be the firm that is already there, locally, every month.
The biggest searches: tax, estate planning and law
On volume, the vertical is led by tax ("self assessment" at 90,500, "tax return" at 60,500) and the steady drumbeat of estate planning, with "power of attorney" at 60,500 and "probate" at 33,100 reflecting an ageing population planning ahead.
Our take: the estate-planning cluster is a quietly growing, recession-resistant source of demand, and it is deeply trust-led. Clear, reassuring content that answers the difficult questions, what probate involves, how a power of attorney works, builds the credibility that wins these instructions long before anyone picks up the phone.
What this means for professional-services firms in 2026
The UK professional-services search market demands discipline. Clicks are the most expensive in search, so measure every one and lean on reputation. January is the predictable peak, so prepare in December. Demand is steady and local, so invest in an always-on local presence. And estate planning is a growing, trust-led opportunity.
