UK sites get AI search data first: how to read Search Console's new AI impressions report

For two years now, the honest answer to "how visible are we in AI search?" has been a shrug. We could see traffic falling on some pages, we could watch AI Overviews eat the top of the results, but we couldn't actually measure how often a brand was showing up inside those AI answers. You were flying blind, and so was every agency telling you otherwise.

UK sites get AI search data first: how to read Search Console's new AI impressions report

That's starting to change. And here's the bit I love: UK sites are getting the data first.

What Google has actually launched

Google has added a new Search Generative AI performance report to Search Console. In plain terms, it gives you a dedicated view of how often your pages appear inside Google's AI features, the AI Overviews and AI Mode answers, as well as generative AI features in Discover.

You can break that down by page, by country, by device and by date, right down to the hour. So for the first time you can see, with Google's own numbers, which of your pages are being surfaced inside AI answers and which aren't.

The kicker is the rollout. Google is releasing this to a subset of UK website owners first, before a wider global launch. That's widely understood to be tied to CMA pressure here in the UK. Whatever the reason, it means UK brands and the agencies that work with them get to see this data while most of the world is still waiting.

The catch you need to understand

Before anyone gets too excited, one important caveat. Right now the report shows impressions only. That means you can see how often you appeared in an AI feature, but you can't yet see clicks, click-through rate or the search queries behind it.

So this is a visibility metric, not a traffic metric. It answers "are we showing up?" but not "is it sending us anyone?". That's a real limitation, and it's worth being upfront with clients about it rather than dressing the numbers up as something they're not.

Worth knowing too: these AI impressions were always counted in your overall Search Console totals. Google has simply split them out into their own view. So your headline numbers don't change, you're just finally able to see how much of your visibility is coming from AI features versus the classic blue links.

There's also a new control buried in here. A toggle lets you block your content from AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover AI. Opting out doesn't hurt your normal Search ranking, but you forfeit any AI traffic and impressions. For almost every business we work with, opting out is the wrong move. The point is to be the source AI quotes, not to hide from it.

What this means for your brand

Here's the practical bit, because data you don't act on is just a nicer-looking dashboard.

First, you now have a baseline. If you've been investing in being quotable, structured content, clear answers, genuine authority on your topic, you can finally see whether it's landing inside AI answers. If you haven't been investing in it, this report will show you exactly how exposed you are.

Second, the page-level breakdown tells you where to focus. The pages appearing in AI features are doing something right, so they're a template for the rest of your site. The pages that should be appearing and aren't are your priority list.

Third, treat the country split as a gift. If you're a UK business, you can see your AI visibility in your actual market rather than a global blur.

And finally, don't panic about the missing click data. It's coming, these things always start with impressions and fill in over time. Get your measurement set up now, start tracking the trend, and you'll have months of useful history by the time clicks arrive.

Our take

We've been saying for a while that AI search is the biggest shift in our industry since mobile, and the hardest part has been proving it with numbers. This report is the first proper crack in that. It's not perfect, it's impressions only and it's a staged rollout, but it's real data on AI visibility, and UK brands have it first.

If you want to know how visible you are inside Google's AI answers, this is the moment to find out rather than guess. We're already pulling these reports for clients on the early rollout. If you'd like us to take a look at yours, get in touch.
