World Cup Kit Search: Why Big Retailers Rank Everywhere but Own Nothing
Sports Direct, Classic Football Shirts and JD Sports appear across almost every World Cup kit search, yet not one of them ranks first for a single qualified nation. So how does Sports Direct still top the entire league table? Here is why breadth gets you seen but rarely gets you the sale.
In the full World Cup kit search league table, the retailers tell a very different story to the manufacturers. They are everywhere and nowhere at once: visible across almost every nation, first on none of them. And yet one of them tops the entire table.
The retail rumble
Sports Direct leads the retailers with 34.6% of their visibility, ahead of Classic Football Shirts on 23.9% and JD Sports on 14.1%. Here is the striking part: across all 23 qualified nation-kit terms, not a single big retailer ranks first for any of them. Every number-one spot goes to a kit manufacturer or an official association store. The retailers rank on page one for term after term without ever topping it, and Sports Direct still finishes top of the whole league table on that consistency alone.
Classic Football Shirts is the interesting exception to the rule. Rather than chase the current kits head-on, it has quietly built a retro and vintage long-tail that ranks for more of these nation terms than almost anyone, a reminder that owning a clearly defined niche can beat fighting the giants on their own ground.
Our take: breadth wins share of voice, but it rarely wins the click. A broad category page like "international football shirts" gets a retailer visible across the board, but a first-place finish earns several times the clicks of fourth. The prize is not ranking everywhere; it is picking the nations where the manufacturer's own page is weak and going after that specific kit with a page that genuinely deserves to win.
What it means for retailers
If you sell kit, do not measure success by how many terms you appear for. Measure it by how many you actually top, because position one earns several times the clicks of position four. Find the nations where the big brands are sloppy, and build the best page on the internet for that shirt. If you want help finding those gaps before the tournament, get in touch.
