Gmail Sponsored Promotions (GSPs) are a form of highly-targeted online advertising within the Google platform, whereby advertising campaigns are conducted based on your recent email behaviour and online purchases.

This is a unique advertising strategy where ads show up only in personal Gmail inboxes in the promotions tab. The ad is comprised of 2 creative elements: a teaser ad and an expanded ad unit, with the teaser holding a 25 character text headline and 100 characters of body text.

For advertisers looking to nurture leads, generate interest for a free trial or raise awareness of their brand, GSPs are ideal.

For example, if a Gmail user recently booked a holiday online they will have received a holiday purchase receipt via email. By choosing a selection of relevant keywords, this behaviour can then be targeted by a hire car business who operate in the chosen destination, by displaying ads to that user the next time they access their email. It is that powerful!

Teaser ads create initial engagement with a user within your target group. Upon clicking a teaser, the user will then be served the fully expanded ad, which looks like an email. The teaser ad can hold a 25 character text headline and 100 characters of body text, and you’ll only be charged when a user clicks on the ad.

Fully expanded ads are served to a user clicking on the teaser advert. A creative then expands into the email area of Gmail, which allows for videos, click to call (where relevant), brand creative and data capture to be embedded within your campaign creative. Because you’ve already paid for the user to click on the teaser ad, you won’t pay any extra when a user engages with your expanded ad.

GSP has some unique targeting capabilities, including:

  • IP Based geo-targeting (country, state, city, and metropolitan area)
  • Language
  • Domain ­- this allows advertisers to target people who have emails from certain domains in their inboxes, which usually means they are on specific mailing lists. You can also exclude users who have received emails from certain domains.
  • Keyword targeting ­- use broad match keywords to target users who have specific keywords in the 300 most recent active emails.
  • User Interest Verticals­ – Target users by user interest, based on the keywords in their active inbox which are mapped to certain verticals.
  • Demographic targeting – Age and gender.
  • Job targeting­ – target users based on their occupations.
  • Email list targeting – The advertiser can specify a list of email addresses to target against (minimum of 1K gmail addresses uploaded in a CSV file (max 5MB per file)*). This is ideal for advertisers looking to reach existing subscribers only.
  • Similar audience targeting – building on your email list targeting, this expands your audience to reach users similar to those you’ve specified.
  • Product purchase (receipt) targeting -­ The ability to target against purchases (products, etc.). This would be an opportunity to upsell or negative target to make sure not to go after users that have purchased the product/service.
  • Device targeting -­ A campaign can target everything, desktop, iOS and Android.
