Kielder Waterside is an award-winning holiday park located in the North East of England near to the Scottish Border, sitting on the banks of Kielder reservoir, in a unique setting of distinctive and outstanding natural beauty.

The park is visited by both holiday makers and day visitors, with lodges designed to complement the landscape, accompanied by a Go Active programmes offering a wide variety of outdoor activities, from fishing to archery, and everything in between. The park also boasts the status of being Europe’s largest Dark Skies park and an array of fantastic local attractions such as Kielder Observatory.

Kielder Waterside is owned and operated by Northumbrian Water who have huge ambitions to make the park the Best in Britain. As part of these plans the company was in the process of launching a range of beautiful new luxury lodges, aimed at meeting the demand from the increasing number of visitors to one of the country’s leading attractions.

The client approached Clicky Media to plan, design and develop a market leading website that aligned with their aims and delivered a more positive perception of the park. The existing website was dated, not mobile or user friendly, and didn’t accurately reflect the stunning destination and the brilliant facilities available.

Key to success would be to ensure the site delivered a more engaging user journey and experience which resulted in increased bookings across holidays and activities. The website needed to be both aesthetically impressive and functional, making the most of the stunning imagery that we have featured across the entire website, and display information and a booking process that was clear and intuitive.

The client also required the ability to enable the promotion of large annual events held on location and to be more adaptable to seasonal changes at the park.

What we did

With our extensive experience in the travel and tourism sector, we undertook the necessary research to strategically plan a site that delivered across all objectives.

Using intelligent insights derived from our auditing and discovery phase, we first addressed the core structure of the website to ensure this offered a simple and clear user journey, whilst also benefitting future planned SEO efforts. The sitemap was revised to add in additional content areas, new features and functionality accordingly.

We created a new style, incorporating refreshed branding, to be eye-catching, interactive, and inspiring, as it was extremely important that users got a real sense of the location. We utilised and featured lifestyle imagery and scenic videos within a clean and clear overall design.

Navigation of the site was also of high importance, so new search functionality and a bespoke mega/sticky-navigation was developed specifically for the site and the requirements.

WordPress was selected as the preferred CMS, due to the simplicity of future management, flexibility and future “marketability”.

The site integrates with a number of platforms across review sites, social media and third party accommodation booking websites to provide dynamic feeds of relevant and useful content.

With the focus on achieving a positive ROI, calls-to-action and data-capture points across the website were a focus and were meticulously planned throughout both the design and development phases of the project.

The initial results to date, even at this early stage, are hugely encouraging and positive, particularly across conversion, user quality, and engagement metrics. The instant impact the new website has achieved includes +92% average time on site, a +109% increase in pages per session, and a -76% bounce rate reduction. These statistics are further emphasised across mobile devices where average session duration has increased by +128%, pages per session growing by +133% and bounce rate reduced by a phenomenal -81.4%.
