ChatGPT Local Search Is Here: What the OpenAI and Yelp Deal Means for UK Businesses

OpenAI has licensed Yelp’s 330 million reviews and 8 million business listings to power ChatGPT’s local recommendations. Here’s why review platforms are becoming the data layer of AI local search, and the five things UK businesses should do about it now.

ChatGPT Local Search Is Here: What the OpenAI and Yelp Deal Means for UK Businesses

Ask ChatGPT for the best Sunday roast near you, or a plumber who can actually come out this week, and something new happens. The answer now arrives with real reviews, real ratings and real photos behind it. That's because OpenAI has done a deal with Yelp, and it quietly changes how local search works.

We've been tracking ChatGPT's march into search all year, from ads going live in the UK to the rise of zero-click journeys. This one matters just as much, because it's about the thing every local business actually wants: being the answer when someone nearby asks.

What OpenAI and Yelp have actually agreed

Yelp is licensing its local dataset to OpenAI: more than 330 million reviews and over 8 million business listings, plus ratings, photos and business details, built up over twenty years. When ChatGPT answers a local query, it can now draw on all of that, with Yelp branding on show and links back to the business's Yelp page.

There's a clever commercial layer too. Yelp's Request a Quote feature is coming along for the ride, so someone can ask ChatGPT for a local tradesperson and message them for a quote without ever leaving the conversation. The deal is non-exclusive, so expect Yelp's data to power other AI assistants over time as well.

Why did OpenAI want it? Because the weakest part of any AI assistant is local knowledge. Models hallucinate opening hours, invent restaurants and serve stale information. Yelp's data is structured, moderated and constantly refreshed by real customers, which is exactly what an AI answer engine needs to be trustworthy. It's a genuine seal of quality for review platforms: the AI companies are now paying for the data that businesses' customers have been creating for years.

Why this matters for local search

For two decades, local discovery has meant one thing: Google. Google Search, Google Maps, the local pack, your Business Profile. That's still where most of the volume is, and it isn't going anywhere soon.

But ChatGPT already sends more clicks to websites than every other standalone AI tool combined, and local recommendations are one of the most natural things to ask it. With Yelp's data plugged in, ChatGPT stops being a clever guesser and becomes a proper local search engine, with reviews and a quote button built in.

The bigger shift is this: AI assistants don't crawl and rank the way Google does. They pull from trusted, structured sources. Review platforms and business profiles are becoming the data layer of AI local search. If your business looks good in those sources, you look good in the AI's answer. If you're thin, inconsistent or unreviewed there, you simply don't come up.

What UK businesses should do now

The good news is that none of this requires a new budget line. It requires doing the local basics properly, because they now pay off in more places at once.

Claim and complete your Yelp listing. Yelp operates in the UK, and its data is now feeding the world's most-used AI assistant. Accurate categories, opening hours, photos and services take an hour to sort and they're now part of your AI visibility.

Treat reviews as a channel, not a chore. A steady flow of genuine reviews, replied to properly, is now marketing infrastructure. It shapes what ChatGPT says about you, what Google's AI Overviews say about you, and what an actual human reads thirty seconds before deciding to call you.

Keep your Google Business Profile immaculate. Google is racing down the same road with AI Mode and AI Overviews, and your Business Profile feeds those answers. The Yelp deal doesn't replace GBP work; it doubles the reasons to do it well.

Get your details consistent everywhere. Name, address, phone and services should match across your website, Yelp, Google and every other listing. AI systems cross-reference sources, and inconsistency reads as unreliability.

Make your website citable. Clear service pages, real location pages, LocalBusiness schema and honest, specific content give AI assistants something to quote. Generic pages get skipped; specific ones get cited.

The bigger picture

Local SEO used to mean ranking in the map pack. It now means being present, accurate and well-reviewed in every source the AI assistants trust. The businesses that treated their reviews and profiles as an afterthought are about to find out they're the product catalogue of AI local search.

Our take: this is the most positive story in local search for years. The data your happy customers create is getting more valuable, not less, and the businesses who look after it will be the ones AI recommends. 👊🏻
