ChatGPT Ads Are Now Live in the UK
OpenAI has switched its ChatGPT advertising pilot on in the UK as of 6 June. Here's who sees the ads, why you can't actually buy them here yet, the honest caveat on measurement, and the three smart moves to make before UK buying opens.
A few weeks ago I wrote about ChatGPT ads coming to the UK and when advertisers might actually get their hands on them. Well, that day moved a lot closer this morning.
As of today, 6 June, OpenAI has switched its ChatGPT advertising pilot on in the UK. Benji Shomair, their VP of Monetisation, confirmed it on LinkedIn. We're the first European market and the first English-speaking market outside North America and Australia and New Zealand to get it. Japan, South Korea, Brazil and Mexico are next in the coming weeks.
So the thing we've been talking about in theory is now live on UK soil. Here's what it means, in plain English, and what I'd actually do about it.
Who sees these ads, and who doesn't
Not everyone. Ads only show to logged-in adult users on the free and Go tiers. If you pay for Plus, Pro, Business or Enterprise, you stay completely ad-free. OpenAI set this out in its own announcement when the US pilot began.
That matters more than it first looks. The free tier is the big crowd, but it skews away from ChatGPT's most engaged professional users, who tend to be the ones paying. So this isn't "every ChatGPT user is now an audience". It's a specific slice of it. Worth keeping in mind before anyone gets carried away.
OpenAI is also sticking to a principle they call answer independence. In short, the ads don't influence the answers ChatGPT gives you. They're shown separately and clearly labelled. That's a sensible line to hold, because the whole reason people trust the tool is that they believe the answers are straight. Targeting works off context hints, phrases advertisers supply to describe the kind of conversation their product fits, rather than digging into what you've actually typed.

The catch: you can't buy them here yet
Here's the bit to be clear-eyed about. The pilot being live means UK users are now seeing ads. It does not mean UK businesses can log in and buy them today.
The self-serve Ads Manager is still operational for US advertisers only. There's no equivalent buying route announced for UK-based advertisers as of this launch. So the consumer rollout is ahead of the buying tools, which is exactly the pattern we saw in the States.
If you remember how fast OpenAI moved over there, that gap probably won't last long. In the US they went from a tightly controlled pilot with six-figure minimum spends to an open self-serve interface with cost-per-click bidding, daily budgets and geo-targeting in a matter of weeks. The minimum spend was removed entirely. I'd expect UK buying access to follow, and to follow quickly.
One honest caveat on measurement
For anyone used to the granular reporting you get from Google Ads and Meta, ChatGPT ads aren't there yet. The basic conversion tracking exists, but the depth of post-click reporting performance marketers expect is still being built. That's not a reason to ignore it. It's a reason to go in with realistic expectations and not bet the budget before the measurement catches up.
What I'd do right now
You can't buy ChatGPT ads in the UK this week, so this is a preparation moment, not a panic one. Three things worth doing.
First, get your conversion tracking and product data clean. When UK buying does open, the brands ready to move are the ones whose tracking, feeds and landing pages are already in good shape. That work pays off across every channel anyway, so it's never wasted. It's the unglamorous half of good paid media, and the half most people skip.
Second, think about organic visibility in AI, not just paid. Ads are one way to show up in ChatGPT. Being the source ChatGPT quotes is the other, and arguably the more durable one. This is the GEO work we keep banging on about: structured, genuinely useful content that answer engines can find, trust and cite. Paid gets you in the door now. Organic keeps you there.
Third, watch the access window and be ready to test small. When self-serve lands for UK buyers, treat it as a test budget, not a land grab. Learn the format, see how it converts for your audience, and scale what works.
The bigger picture
Two years ago the idea of buying an ad inside an AI chat felt like a thought experiment. Today it's a live product in our market. The pace of this has been genuinely remarkable, and it's another sign that "search" and "answers" are splitting into two things brands need to show up in.
For UK businesses the message is simple. You don't need to do anything dramatic today. But you do want your house in order, because when the buying tools arrive, they'll arrive fast. We'll be keeping a close eye on it and will share the moment UK advertisers can actually get in.
If you want a hand getting your tracking, feeds and AI visibility ready for this, that's exactly the sort of thing we love getting stuck into. Give us a shout.
