We’ve been anticipating this for a long time – Facebook has finally announced that WhatsApp will be introducing adverts to its app in 2020.
Facebook made the announcement at its annual Facebook Marketing Summit last week. WhatsApp was acquired by Facebook in 2014 for $19 billion and has seen huge growth since the takeover, with 1.5 billion users worldwide.
However, this announcement goes against its creator’s promise that it would never sell its users’ data or use advertisements on the app. But with such a massive potential for revenue, how could Facebook resist!
WhatsApp ads will appear between WhatsApp stories, similar to Instagram, and will fill the entire screen. They also revealed that WhatsApp product catalogue will also be integrated with existing Facebook Business Manager catalogue.
With digital transparency being such a hot topic at the moment it will be interesting to understand how WhatsApp users’ data is going to be used as many are concerned it will undermine their privacy.
It’s early days yet, but we are looking forward to hearing more about how the adverts will work and the effect they could have for businesses.
